From the first edition of The Holy Land which, with its companion volumes on Egypt and Nubia, form one of the most important and elaborate ventures in nineteenth century publishing, and the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph (Abbey). Roberts toured Egypt, Sinai, Palestine and Syria in 1838 and 1839. The subject is further identified
