Simple answer is that tow receivers are usually manufactured oversized. A standard 50mm receiver can measure as much as 52. 8mm. That means there is movement between the 50mm hitch shank and the receiver. The tow bar manufacturers often include a grub screw to reduce the movement. (We think they should just make the receivers the proper size instead). The shims are the best
